"In 1995, when we were preparing for the National Constitutional Conference under General Abacha our elders in the Niger Delta told us to look out for the support of the Northern & perhaps the Western delegates when proceedings begin..  The understanding was that our South Eastern brothers are always against us.  Truly, we got to the Conference and asked for 25% derivation but NO NORTHERN or SOUTH -WESTERN delegate supported us. To our surprise the South East gave us bloc support and when we decide to stage a walkout, they also walked out with us.  General Abacha then intervened and gave us the 13%  derivation we are enjoying today.  It is confusing that what our elders told us was different from the reality.
