It was earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari and members of
his kitchen cabinet were mounting pressures on BBC Hausa not to air the
controversial interview Aisha Buhari granted it some days ago.
However, the radio station in response has revealed that the only person
that has the power to stop them from airing the said interview was the
First Lady herself.
Recall that Mrs. Buhari had in the interview with BBC Hausa, said that
her husband, Buhari, has sidelined the people who worked tirelessly for
his emergence as the president in the 2015 election while many people
who contributed nothing to his victory are the ones benefiting from his
government.
According to DailyTrust, a source within the Abuja Bureau of the BBC
disclosed that they had received a letter from the Presidency asking for
the interview not to be aired. The source in addition, also made it
known that the Speaker of the House of Representative, Yakubu Dogara,
has equally made an attempt to informally persuade the BBC against
airing the interview.
Nevertheless, all efforts to ensure that the interview is drowned has
been fruitless as the source further stated that the network wouldn’t
back down on its promise to air the interview being an independent media
organisation.
The source maintained that the interview will not be aired by the
broadcast service only if the interviewee, Aisha Buhari, decides against
it. Even in that case, he explained, her voice, renouncing what she had
said in the interview would be aired.
Therefore, until the First Lady orders otherwise, a part of the
interview will be aired in the morning broadcast of BBC Hausa tomorrow
and will be aired in full on its programme, ‘Gane Mini Hanya’, on
Saturday.
